Use New Literacy to improve English
Five Educational Trends for the Next Decade

Since we're on the topic of the future, and we're discussing potential developments in the field of learning and education, I wanted to bring into the conversation some exciting work by the Institute for the Future (IFTF). The Director of the Institute, Marina Gorbis, recently gave a brilliant talk at the 2011 Western Association of Schools and Colleges(WASC) Academic Resource Conference in San Francisco, in which she addressed the idea of social production in education (you can listen to the complete talk here). Speaking of the future of learning, Ms. Gorbis identified five key themes that she envisions as vital trends in the development of education over the next decade:
- Micro-learning: The availability of knowledge accessible in the real world and at any time creates the conditions for learning that is easy, lightweight, and done in context when a person really wants or needs to learn.
- Rich ecology of content and resources: We are seeing the democratization of content, with high quality resources being produced by individuals and groups outside of any institutional framework.
- Community as a driver: Learning is (and has always been) about participating in a conversation, with people that matter to us. Increasingly, schools will need to be asking the question: how can we create social settings that encourage the right kinds of conversations?
- Teachers as social designers: With content cheap and available everywhere, the role of the teacher as the orchestrator of learning communities comes to the fore.
- Non-grade rewards: We have known for some time that grades replace intrinsic rewards with extrinsic, taking pleasure and self-direction out of learning. Ideas for different models of reward are coming from unexpected places, such as gaming, where the concept of leveling up produces a new and engaging dynamic.
I feel that these themes are in strong concordance with the emerging body of work on participatory media cultures, and with my own work in Prof. Henry Jenkins' NML research group. Even though we might have different terms to label these new educational trends processes, I am delighted to see a significant confluence of ideas in respect to both current and future developments.
I think that these five trends really embody some of the keywords in the field of education right now: community, learning ecology, social design, non-grade rewards... If one aspect still needs clarifying, in my opinion, it is the precise role of technology (especially media and educational technology) in the shaping of these trends. How much is micro-learning a result of the availability of (digital) resources, and how much is it a pedagogical paradigm shift? To what extent is the move towards non-grade rewards a symptom of youth involvement with videogames and informal affinity spaces, and to what extent is it a didactic improvement based on educational and psychological research? I am not discounting the possibility that it could be both - certainly, these root causes are not mutually exclusive but rather, extremely intertwined. My complaint it that I would like that relationship to be more clear; I would like the role or specific input of technology in this process to be better understood, and clarified, and discussed.

10 Tips to Create More Purposeful Living
1: You wear what you feel
You can tell a lot by a person’s clothes. Those people who feel down and out usually wear darker clothes, and on the other hand, those that wear bright colors tend to feel better about everything.
2: Don’t forget to smile
No matter what is going on in life, things will always seem better if you remember to smile. Smile is a very persuasive thing and can easily be considered a great definition of persuasion.
3: Explore all the possibilities
Finding the means to purposeful living through the definition of persuasion is sometimes a ever-growing journey but one that is interesting and fulfilling. You need to get out and explore what is out in the world, never settle for the comfort zone.
4: Focus on what is important in life for You
There is one personality development tip that resonates like a mantra, focus on what is important. No matter what happens when you get caught up in life, always remember the things that remain true; family, friends, whatever.
5: Overcome all sorts of distractions
One of the biggest obstacles in the quest for a purposeful living is distractions. We can easily get caught up in health, careers, hobbies or other things that make us forget the reasons we have for living. Having a good definition of persuasion and how we want to get things done will greatly help.
6: Appreciate the little things in life
No matter how good or bad life gets people who “stop to smell the roses” seem to be the happiest. Take that advice and enjoy the little things around you, roses, the sunset, a child’s laughter or just the evening at home watching a movie with your loved ones.
7: Embrace Changes
To prevent the hindrance of progress of following these and other personality development tips through definition of persuasion you must learn to embrace change and accept its gifts and curses the same.
8: Embrace love and joy not status and money
No matter how rich you may become, your life will amount to nothing without learning to love. Love those around you, your family and friends. Take your love and joy and spread it around you, you will feel fulfilled and at peace with yourself like you never believed possible.
9: Remember Nothing is forever
If you wish to live with meaning you need to learn to let go of the materials in life. Knowing the definition of persuasion that we set for ourselves can teach us that when we’re gone its not what we have that matters, but the imprint we leave in those who knew us.
10: Love yourself
Before you can embrace any of the other personality development tips you must successfully love yourself. Come to terms with your flaws, imperfections and faults and open your eyes to the beauty that is life.
